The Hutt River (Te Awa kai rangi) flows through the Hutt Valley from its
source in the southern Tararua Ranges. In the early days the river was an
important transport link for both Maori and later, European settlers. A foot
track along its banks extended to the Wairarapa over the Rimutaka Hill.
The Hutt River Trail re-establishes the lower section of the track to provide
routes for cyclists and walkers as well as access to the river for
swimming, fishing and canoeing. The trail extends from the mouth of the
river, keeping primarily to the eastern bank and will eventually run as far as
the Te Marua Waterworks in Kaitoke Regional Park.
