Our vision
“An extraordinary region: a thriving environment, connected community and resilient future.”
Greater Wellington’s vision is what drives us in everything we do.
We take care of the environment, protecting forests and wildlife. We deliver public transport, making sure it’s sustainable and works well. We manage the region’s supply of clean and healthy drinking water. Our team takes action to reduce the risk of flooding from our rivers, lakes and streams. We ensure everyone is prepared for emergencies such as earthquakes and flooding. Greater Wellington puts all our energy into these things and more – to protect and grow our region.
Our relationships with communities and mana whenua are important to us. We work together to deal with the challenges of today and planning for the future. We’re all proud of where we live. It’s a beautiful place and we’re here to protect it for everyone here and those yet to come.
Nui te ora o te taiao - Thriving environment
It’s an important time to do what we do. Powerful and dynamic forces shape our region, and climate change is adding to the impact. Greater Wellington is at the frontline to protect our environment and make sure it thrives.
Our environment is precious, but fragile – and we’re thinking long-term. We preserve our unique landscapes and indigenous biodiversity. We ensure sustainable land use. We’ve set ourselves the target of clean and safe drinking water, and healthy fresh and coastal water.
He hapori Kotahi - Connected communities
There’s no other region quite like this one. It ranges from quiet rural and coastal areas to the full-on energy of the capital city. We have the most used public transport system in New Zealand and the busiest port. We also have the lowest rate of car ownership.
Greater Wellington is committed to building a vibrant and liveable region. We’re connecting people and places. We’re developing safe, sustainable, and effective public transport that is inclusive. We plan for sustainable rural and urban centres that connect to each other. We’re planning for a region in which people can easily move around.
He manawa o te āpōpō - Resilient future
Safe and healthy communities are a major priority. We’re taking a leadership role to adapt the region to the effects of climate change. Greater Wellington manages the risk of flooding and erosion in our region. Our emergency management team make sure communities can respond to natural hazards.
A strong and thriving low-carbon economy is important for our region long-term. We work together with our regional partners, iwi and central government to positively shape our region, now and in the future.
