Earthquake damaged Ava Bridge reopened to the public

The Southern bridge at Ava Station is again open to the public after extensive works to rebuild the bridge damaged in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes.

To rebuild the bridge contractors have had to replace the foundations, supporting columns and the main bridge span, bringing the central part of the bridge (over the rail lines) up to 100% seismic and crash safety standards.

Due to the complexity of project, including having to work above operating rail lines, it has encountered several delays. While the work on the bridge has been underway, access to the station has been reduced to the Northern bridge, which is accessible by stairs only.

Greater Wellington Regional Council chair of the Sustainable Transport Committee Barbara Donaldson says the community will welcome the opening of the bridge and the increased access to Ava Station.

"Ava Station is a vital part of the northern Petone and Alicetown communities and having this bridge operational again enhances the usability of the station. We are pleased to have been able to reopen the bridge and apologise for the delays in reaching this important milestone.

"While we were waiting for the bridge to be rebuilt, we also spent some time replacing the station shelter, so those returning to the station will notice some improvements."

The bridge was opened to the public on 24 September.
