Upper Hutt residents invited to 'drop in' for a chat about Wellington this Thursday

  • Published Date 02 May 2016

Upper Hutt residents are being invited to drop in to the Cosmopolitan Club on Thursday 5 May and have a chat about Wellington.

"We're having a fresh, region-wide conversation about how we can keep Wellington moving, vibrant and one of the best places in the world to live," says Jim Bentley, director of Let's Get Wellington Moving, a joint initiative of Greater Wellington Regional Council, Wellington City Council and the NZ Transport Agency.

Our focus is on the area between Ngauranga and Wellington Airport encompassing the Wellington Urban Motorway to Wellington Hospital and International Airport and connections to the eastern and southern suburbs.   We really want to understand how Upper Hutt people experience travelling in and through this part of Wellington and what they value most about how Wellington City looks, feels and works. Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy is encouraging Upper Hutt people to be part of this conversation.

"A well-connected region is really important; we have a large number of people commuting from Upper Hutt for work and education in Wellington City. We also travel in to use the airport and other facilities, attend events and to catch up with family and friends. I encourage you to pop in to Cossie Club on 5 May and share your experience of getting around and through this area."

The drop in session will be an opportunity for people to talk to those directly involved with the Let's Get Wellington Moving programme and complete a couple of surveys.  They can also stick post-its on maps pointing out what they like and don't like about travelling in this part of the Capital.

People's views and feedback will be used to develop some basic principles for good city and transport design.   These principles will guide the development of a range of possible scenarios that would make it easier for people to get around as well as enhancing the look, feel and function of the city.
