Rock and gravel are required for a range of construction activities. Companies need to meet requirements before they can collect any rock and while quarrying (or any earthworks) is taking place.

Both regional and local councils have an important role to play in regulating quarrying activities, including monitoring to ensure quarry operations meet requirements.

  • Greater Wellington: is responsible for regulating and monitoring the effects that quarrying rock have on the natural environment. For example on water and air quality.
  • Local councils: are responsible for land use, amenity, roading maintenance, noise, traffic and nuisance dust effects of any earthworks activity – including quarrying.
