On this guided walk, you’ll discover Ōrua-pouanui/Baring Head on the remote coast of Raukawa Moana/Cook Strait. You'll walk alongside regenerating native bush, WW2 remnants, and unique windswept ecosystems. The route offers panoramic views Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington harbour.

Experienced guides from the local community will bring you to the heritage-listed lighthouse complex and share stories of the history of this important maritime facility. You’ll also visit NIWA’s Atmospheric Research Station, normally closed to the public.

Please note:

  • Ōrua-pouanui/Baring Head is very exposed and weather can change quickly, so come prepared.
  • Bring sturdy walking shoes, a packed lunch, water, sunscreen and sun hat, and warm and weatherproof layers.
  • This walk is approximately three hours with some steep sections and requires a good level of fitness. It is not suitable for kids under 13.
