Event details
Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled due to fire risk in East Harbour Regional Park. Thank you for your understanding.
Discover the hidden gem that is the Parangarahu Lakes, nestled against the rugged South Coast. Come experience the stunning views of Wellington Harbour and Raukawa/Cook Strait. Learn why the area is significant to iwi, discover the unique history of Pencarrow Lighthouse from Heritage New Zealand, and find out about the important conservation work underway in the area.
There are two walks to choose from depending on your level of fitness; one up to look inside the lighthouse or a flatter lakeside stroll by Roto Kohangapiripiri including a guided walk with Taranaki Whānui (mana whenua).
Make sure you bring your lunch, snacks and water, suitable walking shoes, sun protection, layers and a light raincoat. Please note, this is an exposed site and there is no shelter.
There are limited spaces on two buses that will transport you to and from the lake entrance - 14 km return. You can also come by bike and join us at the lake or lighthouse. Either bring your own bike or hire one for the day from Wildfinder near the entrance (electric bike option available).
Bookings for transport on the bus are essential, as private vehicles aren’t allowed in this part of the park. Tickets cost $10 per person. Bookings available from 1 February 2024 on Eventfinda.
Dogs are not permitted in this area of East Harbour Regional Park between 31 October - 31 July, so please leave your dogs at home.
